Japan-made messaging app Line revealed today that it now has 400 million registered users. While the app is most popular in Japan, it boasts having over 10 million users in 10 countries – including Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, and the US.
The company also revealed today that the chat app hit new highs in 2014 in terms of usage – 10 billion messages in one day; 1.8 billion stickers sent in a single day; and over 12 million online calls in one day.

Making serious money
Line makes serious money from a lot of fun things, such as social gaming integration and stickers. The app is being evolved by its makers, NHN Japan, into a mobile-first web empire as it gradually rolls out new features and companion apps (usually initially in Japan) such as Line News, Line Mall, and the recent Skype-like voice call service dubbed Line Call.
Despite a huge amount of rivalry from apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Viber, Line managed to pull in $338 million in revenue in 2013.
Line does not disclose monthly active user numbers, so it’s hard to gauge its true popularity up against WhatsApp, which currently has 465 million active users around the world.
